Dr. René Bravo, a community leader who has devoted countless hours toward improving the overall health, safety, and wellbeing of our community, was named the 2020/2021 Citizen of the Year during the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Dinner on Saturday, March 12, 2022, in front of nearly 500 attendees. This is the Chamber’s most prestigious honor presented at the Annual Dinner in recognition of unparalleled service to the community of San Luis Obispo.
As the owner of Bravo Pediatrics, Dr. Bravo’s willingness to impact and better our community through devoting countless hours outside of the workplace has positively affected countless lives in our community. Highly respected in the medical field, he has been a champion for local access to accurate Covid-19 vaccine information for children and has spearheaded an educational campaign across the county to ensure all families have equal access to quality information and data.
Within the community, Dr. Bravo has been a leader with many organizations and on numerous boards. His volunteer efforts have included the First Five of SLO County, the Foundation for SLO Public Libraries, the Women’s Shelter of SLO County, and the American Cancer Society, among others.
“Anytime you are fortunate enough to work alongside him, he puts his whole heart into it and knows how to get answers and solve problems,” says Lynn Cooper, a longtime friend of Dr. Bravo. “It’s an honor to work with him on any project.”

After years of education across California and a residency at Stanford, Dr. Bravo has practiced pediatric medicine locally for more than 35 years. For the last 22 years, he has owned and operated Bravo Pediatrics, providing quality care to thousands of families locally. Passionate about justice, Dr. Bravo has worked tirelessly to provide the best possible medical services to as many people as possible, especially to those that may not otherwise have access.
“He is a man of the utmost integrity,” said Pastor Doug Pittman. “He cares about other people; his decisions are never about himself…he makes decisions considering those around him.”

Driven by a professional and personal passion for justice and accessibility in the medical field, Dr. Bravo believes that investing in a child is investing in the future. The tens of thousands (and counting) of youths’ lives he has directly impacted, both in our community and abroad, shows a strong commitment to that belief.
“I am humbled to receive this award tonight,” said Dr. Bravo after receiving the honor. “I have to say thank you to all the tireless health care workers out there in our community for their work as well. Thank you to the SLO Chamber for this great recognition.”
Join us in thanking our 2020/2021 Citizen of the Year, Dr. René Bravo, for all he has done for this community.
