World War II Commemoration Week is presented by the History Center of SLO County, in partnership with South County Historical Society, Central Coast Living Memory, Moro Bay Maritime Museum, Historical Society of Morro Bay, Central Coast State Parks Association, Central Coast Veterans Memorial Museum, and the Estrella Warbirds Museum. This celebration will take place from April 24 to May 1, 2022.
Tentative Schedule of Events:
- Walking Tour of WW II Sites in Downtown San Luis Obispo with Joe Morris – Sunday, April 24, 2:00 –3:30 pm.
- Film Screening – ”Untold Triumph: America’s Filipino Soldiers – Monday, 4/25, 7 pm, Guadalupe City Auditorium
- Erik Brun and colleague – “They Faced the Rising Sun – The Story of the 54th Coast Artillery – Tuesday, 4/26 , 4:00 pm – Pismo Beach Lighthouse Suites
- Stuart McDowell – Wednesday, April 27 4:30 pm – Calvary Lutheran Church, Morro Bay
- Jim Gregory – Thursday, April 28 at 4 pm – “World War II in Arroyo Grande,” IOOF Hall in AG
- Margaret Ikeda –Friday, April 29 at 4 pm with Jim Gregory and five 4th-generation Japanese American readers, highlighting the experience of Americans of Japanese Ancestry– IOOF Lodge in AG (one of the South County Historical Society Museums).
- James Papp – Sunday, May 1 at 2 p.m., South & Brook Street
All of these events are offered free of charge, however we do request that those planning to attend call the History Center at 805/543-0638 or go online at historycenterslo.org to register (again, for free). Visitors are also encouraged to take in special exhibits and events related to the World War II Homefront at the Central Coast Veterans Museum in San Luis Obispo and the Estrella Warbirds Museum in Paso Robles.
There is one WW II Commemoration Week event for which admission is to be charged: Our History Center Awards Luncheon at the Dallidet Adobe and Gardens on Saturday, April 30 at noon. Tickets are $75-95.
Sponsors will be sought for each of these events from the community. Proceeds from the History Center Awards Luncheon will also support the Center’s Educational Outreach Program for K-12 students throughout the Central Coast. Questions should be directed to John Ashbaugh at 805/550-7713.
