The Grit and Grace of Aging will be the topic of the upcoming The Aging Project, Friday, May 13 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The one-day hybrid seminar, presented by Wilshire Health & Community Services, can be attended either in person at the San Luis Obispo City/County Library Community Room (995 Palm Street, SLO) or online.
This year’s keynote presenter will be Jeanie Greensfelder, a retired psychologist and former San Luis Obispo County poet laureate. Greensfelder will offer a wealth of stories and insights into her journey of embracing the aging experience, from honoring her creative flow while addressing the challenges of emerging to live gracefully.
The Aging Project is an annual in-person event to increase awareness and inspire action related to issues surrounding aging, and focuses on bringing educators, clinicians, and community members together for thoughtful and informative dialogue. Additionally, three virtual quarterly events are included in the admission price.
In addition to Greensfelder, the day will also feature Traci Autry, LMFT, Administrator of Wilshire Community Services, Tai Chi with Russ Brown, retired Cal Poly Dean of Students and currently an instructor at the SLO County YMCA as well as a panel discussion with experts in mental health and aging, including clinical psychologist Loren Acord, and Barri Dymott, clinical supervisor, Senior Peer Counseling at Wilshire Community Services.
“Aging gracefully is a phrase we have all heard but what does it mean,” asks Steve Willey, Wilshire’s director of volunteer services and community education. “Should we strive to grow older while attempting to avoid or navigate away from the challenges that come at us as we age? Those are the very questions we will answer at this seminar.” Attendees can sign up at https://www.wilshirehcs.org/aging-project/. The $65 cost includes the in-person (or virtual) event plus three follow-up virtual sessions. The Aging Project virtual miniseries will take place in September, November and February and will explore such topics as aging parents, the mind-body perspective on managing chronic pain and downsizing and letting go of material objects.
