On Wednesday, May 1, 2013, two dozen Cuesta College students will participate in Poetry in Translation, an annual bilingual poetry reading. The event will take place from 7:30 p.m. – 8:45 p.m. on the north county campus in Dallons Hall, room N3102.

The participating students, along with English Second Language faculty members, will be reading poetry in English and in their native language. This year the native languages will include Spanish, Portuguese and Chinese and some of the poetry is authored by the students themselves.

“Students who participate experience such a sense of pride and accomplishment that comes from speaking both their native language and English in front of a live audience,” said Donna Bower, ESL instructor. “This is a great way to demonstrate what these students have learned. They have put so much of their heart and soul into this endeavor and that will come across loud and clear, regardless what ESL level they’re in.”

The reading is open to the community and Cuesta College students, faculty and staff. Refreshments will be provided beginning at 7:15 p.m. The reading is not recommended for children under the age of six. The event is being sponsored by the Cultural Diversity and Student Equity Committee and Associated Students of Cuesta College.
