San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden presents a timely workshop on seasonal fruit and nut tree pruning on Saturday, Jan. 19 from 1 to 3 p.m. (rain date Saturday, Jan. 26 from 1 to 3 p.m.). Now’s the time, while your trees are dormant, discover the safe and effective way to add style and functionality to your trees.
SLO Botanical Garden volunteer and pruning expert, Curtis Counts, will lead attendees through the steps of proper tree care and aesthetic pruning techniques. Curtis will apply his theme of “aesthetic pruning” to fruit and nut trees, and will discuss how plants benefit from pruning, the proper tools and uses, and general pruning techniques you’ll be able to take home and apply to your own garden.
Curtis studied under Merritt College instructor Dennis Makishima who is widely recognized as a master of “aesthetic pruning.” Aesthetic pruning seeks to bring out the natural beauty of trees and shrubs by harmonizing the appearance of the tree or shrub with the overall context of the environment in which it is grown. Factors to be considered are the role of the plant in the garden, the nature of the surroundings, and the human environment in which the garden exists.
Programs begin at 1 p.m. in the Oak Glen Pavilion and are followed by a free docent-led walk through the Garden at 2, $5 for members/$10 non-members. For more information contact us at 805.541.1400×304 or [email protected].
