sayyestomeasuredAmy Burton of Morro Bay, Brian Clausen of San Luis Obispo and Ann Dover of Los Osos have been named co-chairs of Central Coast Citizens for Measure D, the committee working to secure voter approval for a San Luis Coastal Unified School District bond measure on the November ballot. Local CPA Chris Delaney is serving as the group’s treasurer. The leadership group is part of an all-volunteer 20-member steering committee.

The proposed bond measure would raise $177 million for construction and renovation at district schools including badly needed upgrades for SLO High School and Morro Bay High Schools, and renovation of facilities at all other schools in the district.

Committee members have coalesced to win community support for the new bond measure, noting that original improvement plans were put on hold through the recession that rocked the nation in 2008-09.

“Our community is passionate about education and the need to prepare students for a successful future, and now is the time to take steps to make that happen,” said Ann Dover, Citizens for Measure D co-chair. “We have outdated, undersized, poorly lit classrooms designed over 50 years ago. Buildings are in disrepair. Roofs and plumbing leak and lack energy efficiency. We need to upgrade our learning environments and improve generations-old technology.” Dover said that San Luis Coastal has always been recognized for providing quality education, “now our facilities need appropriate upgrades to prepare our students’ for a better chance in our changing global economy.”

The committee represents parents and other concerned residents who recognize the importance of education. “This is not a small group of people looking out for our own kids,” said Dover. “Our treasurer is a young professional who doesn’t even have children—that tells you something about the group.”

San Luis Coastal Unified School District serves a total of 7,500 kindergarten through 12th grade students residing in San Luis Obispo, Los Osos, Morro Bay and Avila Beach and unincorporated areas. Find out more information at www.SayYestoMeausreD.org
