The Cuesta College Library will be celebrating Veterans Day with a display of new books, DVDs and other materials related to veterans, their families, and military history. All items are available for check out at the San Luis Obispo and North County campus libraries and include poetry and novels written by veterans, resources on transitioning from combat to home, books on understanding Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and more.
The Cuesta College Library Department is a partner in the California Statewide Library Outreach to Veterans Initiative for 2014. Many of the veteran book display titles were selected and purchased from a list of recommendations as part of this program. There are also a limited number of free copies available of the book California Veteran’s Resource Book, 2014/2015.
The college was recently designated a 2015 Military Friendly® School by Victory Media, the leader in successfully connecting the military and civilian worlds. The Military Friendly® Schools designation is awarded to the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to embrace military students, and to dedicate resources to ensure their success in the classroom and after graduation. Cuesta College currently serves more than 700 veterans annually and has a dedicated Veterans Resource Center and provides veterans with free campus parking passes.
Additionally, the college’s popular Book of the Year program will focus in 2015 on raising awareness of veterans and their life stories. The 2015 book is the bestselling novel, The Yellow Birds, by writer, poet and veteran Kevin Powers. Save the date for Powers’ keynote presentation on March 26, 2015, from 5 pm. – 7 p.m. in the Cuesta College Cultural and Performing Arts Center.
