After a 10-year decline, elementary school enrollment has experienced a 3 percent increase over the past few years, leading the San Luis Coastal Unified School District to reconsider its previous decision to allow the city to study the old Pacheco School site at Slack Street and Grand Avenue for future land development. The school district is planning to launch an enrollment study and update its facility master plan; based on current enrollment projections, the Bishop’s Peak Elementary School campus will not have enough classrooms to accommodate any future growth. The increase in enrollment can be partially attributed to the addition of university housing which has opened nearby homes for families that had once been occupied by students. The Pacheco site had recently been under negotiation for a possible student housing development for Cal Poly. At last night’s meeting the city council agreed to remove the Pacheco site from its list of site alternatives, knowing that in the future it could again be available for consideration.
