Good Morning SLO is our platform for sharing ideas, news and inspiration. A monthly program that brings community leaders, business owners, nonprofit executives and staffers together, and enables us to reconnect, engage and learn from each other.
Our goal is to provide insight into business, community and legislative issues and share the stories of those making a difference. We want audience members to leave with ideas and information about how to better their personal and professional lives.
Good Morning SLO happens on the fourth Thursday of every month except November when it is on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving.

The original Rotary Club of San Luis Obispo was formed in 1923, 100 years ago. During the past century, Rotary has built community projects, raised money for our nonprofits and engaged our youth in leadership activities. We’ve invited current club President Barry VanderKelen to talk about the past, present and future of Rotary in SLO.
FEEDING SLO COUNTY
The pandemic created a profound increase in numbers of those experiencing food insecurity in SLO County. As time passed, we hoped that those numbers would recede, but inflation and the end to emergency policies has continued to drive the demand. Molly Kern will join us from the SLO Food Bank to share all they’re doing to meet the need.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT 101
Cal Poly recently announced their new Associate Executive Director of Economic Development in Cal Poly’s President’s office, and she brings a wealth of leadership experience in the private sector. We’ve invited Karen Tillman to share about her first few months on the job and where she sees this role fitting in the community.
AN UNFINISHED HISTORY OF BLACK OBISPANS
Black history in San Luis Obispo can be difficult to piece together in a cohesive narrative. Ethan Gutterman, a history student at Cal Poly, is working to do just that and will join us to present his award-winning research on the historic Black community of San Luis Obispo, focusing on the period during and after World War II to the mid-70s.
DOWNTOWN VITALITY
The numbers are in: Downtown SLO just released their annual report, and there’s a lot to be excited about. We’ve invited Bettina Swigger to touch on the report’s highlights, say farewell as she prepares to leave San Luis Obispo and speak to the future of Downtown SLO as they search for a new CEO.
CELEBRATE SOULS NOT LOST
Traditions remembering passed loved ones are the foundation of many fall celebrations and present in cultures throughout the world. Francisco Ramirez will join us from the Latino Outreach Council to share about the Día de los Muertos festival in Mission Plaza and its significance to our culture as well as invite everyone to engage in the party.
CAL POLY BAND
We’ll finish our morning off on an exciting note with a performance from the Cal Poly Marching Band. The 225-member strong Pride of the Pacific Mustang Marching Band is an organization of Cal Poly students who perform at sports games and special functions throughout the year.
