Cal Poly students will have a chance to see their instructors perform at a faculty showcase recital at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, in Room 218 of the Davidson Music Center (No. 45) on campus.

Cal Poly’s applied faculty are recognized across the region for their expertise in solo and chamber ensemble performance. For this showcase recital, intimate works that highlight their artistic achievements will be presented.

“The recital is a fun opportunity for our faculty to collaborate and to demonstrate the breadth of talent across our teaching studios,” said recital coordinator Christopher J. Woodruff.

Woodruff, trumpet, and John Astaire, percussion, will perform “Southern Cross” by Mutsuhito Ogino; Laura M. Kramer, saxophone, will perform “Maï” by Ryo Noda; Emily Lanzone, violin, and Ken Hustad, bass, will perform a duet by Reinhold Glière; Lisa Nauful, bassoon, and Barbara Spencer, cello, will perform a concerto by Antonio Vivaldi; and Heidi Butterfield, oboe, and Paul Woodring, piano, will perform a movement of an oboe concerto by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Woodring is a staff accompanist and the university organist.

Brynn Albanese, violin, and Ken Habib, oud, will be joined by guest artists Linda Ashworth, qanun, Troy Hanson, bass, and Keeth CrowHawk, percussion, for three works that share an Arabic melodic mode or system of melody formation. “Dulab Hijaz,” composed by Habib, is an introductory genre in the mode named after the Hijaz Mountains of the western Arabian Peninsula; “Fuq al-Nakhl” (Above the Palm Trees) is a favorite Iraqi tune; and “`Ali Pasha” is a piece of Ottoman art music named for the famous governmental minister.

For information on the recitalists, visit the Music Department’s faculty website.

Music majors at Cal Poly are required to be enrolled in applied or private lessons each quarter. Many non-music majors who are enrolled in larger ensembles like the Cal Poly Symphony, Wind Bands and University Jazz Bands also have lessons with faculty.

The recital is open to the public. Admission is $5 at the door. Parking is free after 5 p.m. in the Grand Avenue parking structure (Lot 130). For more information on parking on campus, visit Cal Poly’s Transportation and Parking Services website.

The recital is sponsored by Cal Poly’s Music Department and College of Liberal Arts.
