San Luis Obispo mayoral candidates Heidi Harmon and T. Keith Gurnee will participate in an open forum hosted by Mustang Media Group, the Cal Poly Journalism Department’s student-run media organization, from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Oct. 30, in the University Union Plaza on campus.
“The Mustang Media Group team is thrilled to host our first completely student-run mayoral forum with incumbent Heidi Harmon and T. Keith Gurnee. Both candidates have a connection to Cal Poly and are campaigning on issues that deeply affect the campus community,” said Austin Linthicum, business administration junior and editor-in-chief of Mustang Media Group.
The forum is intended to engage student voters and answer questions about candidate platforms, local politics and Cal Poly-related issues such as housing; party registration and increased fines; and alternative transportation. Students may submit questions to the candidates on the Mustang News website, mustangnews.net/forum, prior to the event. While the discussion will touch heavily on issues related to students and the Cal Poly community, the forum also will include topics of interest to the broader community; the general public is invited to attend.
Cal Poly has the second highest number of locally registered students among universities in California, according to the California University and College Ballot Bowl, launched by the California Secretary of State.
“We look forward to discussing issues that matter to students, which we hope will empower our audience to head to the polls on Election Day,” Linthicum said.
Elections take place Tuesday, Nov. 6. Cal Poly students must be registered to vote in San Luis Obispo County to participate in local elections. On-campus residents are only eligible to vote at the county, state and federal level.
