SAN LUIS OBISPO — Cal Poly’s best student jazz musicians will display their dedication to America’s great art form — jazz — at the annual “Just Jazz” concert presented by University Jazz Bands at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, in the Performing Arts Center’s Christopher Cohan Center.
“Most of the musicians in the jazz bands — as well as in the other Music Department ensembles — are not music majors but are very dedicated to jazz and enjoy playing it,” said Director of Jazz Studies Paul Rinzler. “The enthusiasm from everyone in the bands is easy to hear and to see at the jazz bands’ concerts.”
The students help produce “Just Jazz” and form the direction it will take. This is especially apparent during the improvisations, in which musicians must make up the music on the spot. Students have input into other aspects of the concert as well.
The bands will play tunes including John Coltrane’s classic “Lazy Bird;” a jazz/funk arrangement of the Average White Band’s popular “Pick up the Pieces;” a rhythmically complex and multi-meter composition by Todd Munnik titled “Guten Tag, Zigaretten?” (Good Day! Cigarette?); and original compositions by band members.
Tickets to the concert are $12 or $14 for the public, and $9 or $12 for students and Jazz Federation members. Event parking is sponsored by the PAC. Tickets are sold at the Cal Poly Ticket Office between noon and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. To order by phone, call 805-SLO-4TIX (805-756-4849).
The Music Department offers a 10 percent discount to patrons who buy season tickets to four of its events through the Cal Poly Ticket Office; a 15 percent discount is given on tickets to five or more events.
The concert is sponsored by Cal Poly’s Music Department, College of Liberal Arts, and Instructionally Related Activities program. For more information, call the Music Department at 805-756-2406 or visit the department’s calendar website at music.calpoly.edu/calendar/.
