California Secretary of State Alex Padilla will visit Cal Poly to speak at a student forum on voting rights. The recent national election and reports of restricted voter access nationwide has elevated public interest in the voting process. Last year, outreach efforts at Cal Poly engaged more than 4,500 students — more than 20 percent of the student body — to register to vote, request an absentee ballot or sign up for reminders about upcoming elections through TurboVote, a registration system created by the nonprofit, non-partisan organization Democracy Works.

Secretary Padilla’s presentation will cover his office’s efforts to modernize elections and enhance voter engagement. A question-and-answer session will follow the secretary’s presentation. California Senate Majority Leader Bill Monning will moderate the conversation. The non-partisan event is sponsored by the Cal Poly Political Science Department and Associated Students, Inc. (ASI).
