Cracking the Government Code is a new event series designed to get you answers your questions and share shortcuts to more quickly and easily shape the community you love. If you’re someone who wants to get involved and help craft the future you want to see, this series was designed for you.

Session 5 | Be the change: How ‘normal residents’ can get involved and shape their community

Guided by Cal Poly’s Dr. Matt Moore, Be the change will equip and inspire you to level up your engagement by working smarter – not necessarily harder. Panel guests will share their experiences and advice for getting involved, staying motivated and integrating advocacy and service with the rest of your life.

Vice Mayor, Erica A. Stewart was elected to the SLO City Council in November 2018 — making history as the first African American elected in the city’s history. Professionally, she is the Assistant Director of Personnel & Marketing for Campus Health & Wellbeing at Cal Poly.

In line with her passion of helping people improve their lives, the vice mayor has served as a County Commissioner, President of HRCC, steering committee member for the City of SLO’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Taskforce and as President of the Cal Poly Alumni Association board.

Kim Bisheff teaches journalism at Cal Poly and serves as a faculty fellow at the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, specializing in public affairs reporting and news literacy. A former SLO City Planning Commissioner and active volunteer on political campaigns including the successful Yes on Measure G-20 campaign, Kim is also involved in the community as a SLO Food Bank board member and a member of the SLO Chamber’s Economic Development Committee.

Krista Jeffries is a stay-at-home mom of three who lives in Grover Beach. She got started in community organizing with public art and city beautification, and now works primarily in housing and transportation as a Lead Organizer for YIMBY Action. Krista’s goal is to help make the Central Coast a beautiful, colorful and affordable place with room for everyone to live and grow.
