About this event
Is ‘Missing Middle’ the solution to SLO’s housing woes?
Between a large, single-family home and a towering apartment building, there is a sweet spot of housing that used to be the backbone of our neighborhoods but has lost its place over the past 50 years. As our community and the entire state grapple with the need for affordable housing and housing in general, infill projects take a front row seat.
Tony Perez, Senior Associate with Opticos Design, will share his knowledge and experience of small-scale housing in cities around the country and the world, with historic context and, more critically, current policies and programs that local communities can use right now for housing that supports equity, affordability and character.
For public safety, this event is only open to those who are fully vaccinated. Please bring proof of vaccination. Doors open at 5:45 p.m. for outdoor drinks and appetizers; masks will be required indoors during the talk.
Now known as “Missing Middle Housing”, these smaller, infill homes fit within existing and new neighborhoods, creating delightful areas to walk and serving a variety of household sizes and incomes. Whether a duplex, courtyard bungalow, four-plex retrofit or townhomes, Missing Middle Housing may be the bit of magic we need in SLO to help address our housing challenges.
With 34 years of experience, including 12 as a public sector planner, Tony Perez has spent the last 22 years helping communities improve their zoning codes with a focus on writing Form-Based Codes. An expert in translating policy direction into clear and implementable development standards, Tony works to enable the community’s vision by identifying and addressing barriers and writing responsive standards.
COVID 19 safety protocols will be in place, including outdoor seating, social distancing and/or wearing masks, as determined at the time of the event.
