This program explores the evolution of chamber music for wind instruments. We begin with a selection from Telemann’s Tafelmusik, a collection of chamber works for varying ensembles that was the composer’s most ambitious publication during his lifetime. The horn takes a leading role in Mozart’s delightful Horn Quintet, and the clarinet follows suit in Brahms’ Clarinet Quintet. For a contemporary perspective, the program finishes with John Harbison’s 1979 Quintet for Winds.
