The San Luis Obispo Police Department has seen a significant rise in the number of bicycle thefts recently. We have been diligently working on this problem and while doing so we have confiscated a number of bicycles that we cannot find the owners. Registering bicycles deters theft and helps locate the bicycle owner in case of loss. Ideally, the owner needs the serial number to report a lost or stolen bicycle to the police, but most people do not have this number readily available. However, when a bicycle is registered and/or engraved police can quickly locate the record, greatly enhancing the investigation.
On Saturday May 14th from 10 AM until 2 PM the San Luis Obispo Police Department will register bicycles at the police department. We will also engrave your driver’s license number on your bicycle if you wish. Bicycle registration and engraving programs increase the likelihood of a bicycle being located and returned if lost or stolen.
Citizens who wish to participate in this free program can show up at the police department with their bicycle and driver’s license or state issued id anytime between 10 AM and 2 PM on this Saturday.
