Our planet has already begun to experience the effects of the sixth mass extinction of flora and fauna. The last one occurred 65 million years ago – triggered by a meteorite crashing into the Earth that resulted in the extinction of 75% of the species. Today scientists believe that if current patterns continue within 300 years 75% of the species of plants and animals we now know of will be gone. Our catastrophic ‘meteorite’ does not come from space but from us- it is a result of human activities including habitat encroachment and fragmentation, climate change from CO2 emissions, hunting, pollution, competition from domestic grazing animals, and introduced diseases. The artists who have created works for this show are deeply concerned for the fate of this fragile planet and all its inhabitants.
