San Luis Obispo Classical Academy (SLOCA) is hosting our annual mini symposium, an interactive one-day event open to the community to learn about a hand-selected topic. This year, our theme is “(Un)Common Arts: Rediscovering the Simple Things in Life,” and we’re excited to host guest speaker Chris Hall, author of Common Arts Education and founder of “Always Learning Education.” This event is open to parents, educators, and any other community member interested in learning what the common arts are and why they matter!
The common arts got their name from the fact that they are ‘common’: skills by which everyone meets their basic, embodied needs in the world. We need to eat, have shelter, heal, trade, find our way around, and more in order to keep going. And yet, they are also UN-common today. We outsource many of these to others, trading money for goods and services. In so doing, we experience convenience, but we lose some baseline skills and proficiencies, as well as a deeply-rooted connection to the natural world and the orders of things.
Join us for the morning, an exclusive VIP lunch with our guest speaker, the afternoon, or any combination of the three as we rediscover the value of the common arts and practice techniques to integrate them into our everyday lives.
