Famed cellist Amit Peled brings his talent and artistry back to SLO to perform Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No.1. In 2020, he performed solo Bach from his studio in Baltimore in a digital recording as we all navigated the pandemic online and at the drive-in! The Symphony will begin with Brahms’ Variations on a theme by Haydn, also known as the St. Anthony Variations, and Ralph Vaughn Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme of Greensleeves. Vaughn Williams taught composition at the Royal College in London during the 1930s, when composer, Douglas Lilburn was a student. Lilburn is New Zealand’s foremost composer, and we conclude with his Symphony No. 2. His music shows the influences of Vaughan Williams and Jean Sibelius.
