Please join us for a tour of the peaceful and picturesque landscapes of the SLO Botanical Gardens. Afterwards, Ken Haggard from San Luis Sustainability Group will lead a presentation on the sustainable design practices utilized for the Garden’s education building.
The education building was completed in 2007. Schematic design was a joint venture of San Luis Sustainability Group and Habitat Studio, architectural competition by SLOSG, and construction by Richard Beller. The building design is based on the following concepts:
1. Our climate is such that we can provide most of the heating and cooling of an assembly building of this type by passive solar design and night vent/high interior mass cooling.
2. Natural lighting is an essential part of achieving this.
3. Strawbale construction is also helpful.
4. Water conservation and production on site is important for our time and place.
