HomeSlice250HomeSlice, a mobile application for roommates, celebrated its App StoreSM approval last Thursday, November 21.

HomeSlice is a mobile application whose goal is to encourage transparency and accountability between roommates by enabling them to create a private social network equipped with all the tools needed to stay on top of household supplies, chores and bills.

HomeSlice has been an effective tool for many homes already as the application received over 600 downloads in its first day.

“I can already tell that HomeSlice is going to improve the functionality in our home,” Matthew Mendoza, 4th year Communication Studies Major at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. “My roommate left a huge mess in the kitchen, I notified him about it using the app and came home to a kitchen that was spick and span.”

HomeSlice began as a senior project for four Cal Poly students in the Fall of 2012. Jeremy Moyers, a 4th year Computer Science Major, came up with the original idea for the application when he noticed that he and his roommates needed a better system for keeping track of the financials and inventory for household supplies.

He pitched the idea to an Entrepreneurship Senior Project class where he met Shea Brucker and Patrick Montejano, both Business Majors with Entrepreneurship Concentrations and now Cal Poly Alumni. Immediately they formulated the core team and recruited Caine Fair, 5th Year Business Major and Graphics Minor, to be the UX/UI Designer for the application.

The Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Small Business Development Center and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo provided the HomeSlice team with opportunities and resources that have contributed greatly to their early success.

The application is available for free on the App StoreSM. The team has plans to release the Android version at the beginning of December.
