With a 4-0 vote last night the SLO City Council agreed to pursue a vote-by-mail election to fill the seat being vacated by Andrew Carter on Feb. 20. The landscape of potential candidates continues to take shape. According to insiders, 3rd District Planning Commissioner Carlyn Christianson intends to throw her hat in the ring. Christianson is the medical practice administrator at Coastal Anesthesiology Medical Associates and previously served on the SLO City Planning Commission. Several SLO residents have voiced their plans to run for the seat, including Jeff Aranguena, a teacher; Paul Brown, a former council member and current Guadalupe police officer; and Kevin Rice, a Los Angeles County firefighter. Both Aranguena and Rice ran in the November general election. Meanwhile, Amy Kardel, co-owner of Clever Ducks, a local IT services company, who recently expressed interest in the vacant seat, has decided not to run for election. The special election will take place by this summer.
