Sixth Graders at Bishop’s Peak Elementary School in San Luis Obispo, CA collected aluminum cans all year long, and presented a check to Jack’s Helping Hand on June 5.

Child Ambassador Tyler Borges, a 13-year-old Laguna Middle School student who has received assistance from the nonprofit, proudly accepted the check on behalf of the nonprofit organization.

“Jack’s Helping Hand has done so much for me and my family, I’m just happy I can help in any way,” Borges said. “These types of donations are really fun, because it brings a whole group of kids together for one higher purpose: To help local kids with special needs and their families.”

Jack’s Helping Hand is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping local families of children with special needs. Borges, who successfully battled a rare form of cancer, was one of those children. Jack’s Helping Hand provided assistance for transportation to New York and UCLA for his treatments, as well as gas, food and lodging and other special equipment for use at home. The Borges family has been a strong advocate for the nonprofit ever since, volunteering and raising funds for Jack’s Helping Hand.

“We’re so grateful for the community support that continues to pour in; it all goes to local families who need help navigating some very challenging medical conditions and disorders,” said Mary Illingworth, Jack’s Helping Hand executive director. “The Borges family is the perfect example of how community support of Jack’s Helping Hand can help ease some of the stress in already impossible situation.”

Every little bit counts, she added. And there are many ways to donate besides classroom fundraising projects, including individual cash donations, group donations, business sponsorships, and volunteerism. Jack’s Helping Hand relies entirely on donations to fund projects and services to meet the requests of local families of children with special needs.
