The SLO Saturday Morning Farmers’ Market will celebrate 35 years on the Central Coast with a special salute Aug. 31 to farmers and shoppers from the market’s beginnings in the summer of 1978.

Local well-known farmers Ernie Righetti, 96, octogenarian Wylda Byng as well as Jim and Carolyn Park will relive the memories and share the recognition with loyal shoppers Fay Guerra, Alan Delamartini and Paula Westbrook.
It’s the third in a series of anniversary events sponsored by the SLO County Farmers’ Market Association and a chance to “Wine & Dine” with New Times columnist Kathy Marcks Hardesty and chef Robert Trester of the Gardens of Avila.

SLO Wine Country will offer wine tasting and the market will give out strawberry shortcakes to the first 500 guests. Brazilian Choro music, market history displays and giveaways will cap this final anniversary event.

In operation since 1978, the Saturday morning market was one of the first five farmers’ markets in the state of California. That was the year then-Governor Jerry Brown signed the Direct Marketing Act establishing California Certified Farmers’ Markets.

The SLO Saturday markets take place from 8-10:45 a.m. at the World Market and Embassy Suites parking lot.
