Nature Corps is kicking off its Green Peeps Campaign on Saturday, July 20 by inviting the community to participate in a ShareSLO Community Day at Morro Strand State Beach. The event is being sponsored by Rosetta, a marketing firm based in San Luis Obispo.
The event kicks off at 8:30 a.m. at the Cloisters Community Park in Morro Bay. The public is invited to join Rosetta employees and our SLO Ambassador as they gather on the strand to help restore the habitat of the threatened Snowy Plover. Volunteers will be removing nonnative grasses that have overtaken the dunes and significantly reduced the number of Plover nesting sites.
The nonnative grasses are easy to remove and with a little help from the volunteers, in less than a year’s time the dunes will rebound and be teaming with the region’s native plants and animals.
After helping to protect the Snowy Plover, Nature Corps will officially induct the volunteers as their special Green Peeps members. The members will receive special recognition and benefits for their conservation efforts and support.
Fun and Play:
After working through the morning, volunteers can enjoy a picnic on the beach or just relax playing Frisbee with family and friends. There will also be opportunities to go kayaking across the Bay. As a way of showing their support, local kayaking vendors are offering reduced rental rates for the volunteers, so sign up soon!
