French Hospital Medical Center (FHMC), a member of the Dignity Health system that locally includes Arroyo Grande Community Hospital and Marian Regional Medical Center, is pleased to announce the election of new officers and the appointments of new and returning members to serve on two key boards for the 2017-2018 year. Nearly 50 community members bring a vast background to the table while guiding and supporting community health care on the Community Board and the Foundation Board.

FHMC Community Board

The role of the Community Board is to assure that health services provided at the hospital are medically necessary, of high quality, safe, effective, efficient, and consistent with community standards. The board oversees quality assessment, performance improvement, patient-safety, and management activities of the hospital, and confirms that these activities are consistent with established standards and policies and procedures.

Newly elected Community Board officers include:

Leopold Selker, PhD, is elected as the new Board Chair of the FHMC Community Board. Dr. Selker holds numerous degrees including an MBA in executive management from Northwestern University, a PhD in higher education administration from Texas A&M University, a Master’s diploma in Public Administration/social policy from the University of Stockholm and a Bachelor’s Degree from Canisius College. Dr. Selker also serves as a member of the Board of Directors for Applied Silver, Inc. and is a research scholar in residence for California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.

Michael Clayton, MD, is elected as the new Vice-Chair of the FHMC Community Board. Dr. Clayton received his medical degree from Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich Faculty of Medicine and has been in practice for more than 20 years.

Peter Oppenheimer is elected as the new Secretary for the FHMC Community Board. Oppenheimer currently serves as vice chairman and chair of the development committee on the foundation board of directors for California Polytechnic State University Foundation. Previously, Oppenheimer served as the senior vice president and chief financial officer at Apple Inc. from 2004-2014, and has over 30 years of combined experience as a chief financial officer or controller for major public corporations. Oppenheimer also serves on the board of directors for Goldman Sachs as an independent director.

FHMC Foundation Board

The French Hospital Medical Center Foundation is a non-profit, public benefit organization with the purpose to raise funds for FHMC through charitable contributions for the betterment of community health care. The FHMC Foundation relies on the generosity of the community to help support hospital efforts of providing quality health care for local programs and services. The Foundation Board is made up of unpaid volunteers who donate their time and effort to raise funds for San Luis Obispo’s only not-for-profit hospital. Since its inception in 2005, the FHMC Foundation has raised more than $35 million for patient care and services.

Liz Summer is elected as the new chair for the FHMC Foundation Board. She is currently a vice president / senior relationship manager with Pacific Premier Bank, formerly Heritage Oaks Bank. Previously, she was a founder and publisher of Central Coast Magazine and was a financial advisor with Merrill Lynch. Her involvement with the San Luis Obispo community has spanned more than 20 years. She is a past president of the San Luis Obispo Symphony board of directors, past president of San Luis Obispo Rotary Club Daybreak and current president of Hospice SLO board of directors. Summer was recently named 2016 Citizen of the Year by the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce.

Erik Justesen is elected as the new vice chair for the FHMC Foundation Board. He is a licensed landscape architect and urban planner with 32 years of practice experience. Justesen has held the position of President and CEO at RRM Design Group since 2006. He is a member of the Urban Land Institute, the American Planning Association, and is on the board of directors of the San Luis Obispo County YMCA. He has also been a member of the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce board of directors and has been active on various Chamber committees. Justesen continues to be very involved in the San Luis Obispo community where he has lived for more than 30 years.
