The Central Coast Economic Forecast, in collaboration with Beacon Economics, is conducting a survey of San Luis Obispo County nonprofits to help bring recognition of the economic impact these organizations have on the region and their interdependence with the for-profit sector.
“Our personal experiences tell us that the nonprofit sector is a major contributor to the high quality of life in the county, and this study will provide additional information about the nonprofit sector’s role in this regard,” said Barry VanderKelen, executive director of the San Luis Obispo County Community Foundation.
In addition to revealing the diverse and substantial economic and social impacts that nonprofits have on the area’s growth and quality of life, the study will also inform residents of what services are available.
“One goal is to educate the region on what groups are out there and how much of an economic and social impact nonprofits have,” said Sherif Hanna, managing partner at Beacon Economics. “We really want people to know how these nonprofits are helping and understand the value that they bring to the community.”
The survey will ask nonprofits for information about their revenue, expenses, aggregate employment information and volunteer support.
“The strength of the results will increase as more nonprofits participate in the study,” VanderKelen said. “All nonprofits, regardless of size, are encouraged to participate.”
The survey started June 24 and will remain open for three weeks. The results will be released at the Central Coast Economic Forecast in November.
