Thanks to a generous grant from The Moca Foundation, PCPA is able to extend the run of the exceptionally popular outreach production of Tomás and the Library Lady which is based on the true story of celebrated author and educator Tomás Rivera.
Growing up in a family of migrant farm-workers, Tomás was terrified of school because he couldn’t read or speak English. When he found refuge in a Carnegie Public Library in Iowa, and befriended a compassionate “Library Lady,” he developed an insatiable love for books and learning.
Rivera went on to become the first minority chancellor in the University of California system. Today, the library at the University of Riverside bares his name.
PCPA acting interns who comprise the four-actor cast have been receiving enthusiastic ovations from students and teachers since the tour begain in early October. Tomás and the Library Lady is based on the book by Pat Mora and adapted for the stage by José Cruz González. It is appropriate for grades K-8
The play looks at the obstacles faced by a young child who cannot read or speak English, but how he was able to overcome those fears after someone took the time to introduce him to the magical worlds within literature which in turn unlocked his imagination and thirst for knowledge..
PCPA Education and Outreach Director Leo Cortez said, “Presenting shows like Tomás and the Library Lady in the schools not only expose students to the world of live theatre, but it does so with a story that is relevant to their life experience. The story carries a wonderful message, that fear can be conquered by knowledge. Tomás found his courage to face his fears in the joyful stories in books -and his life was forever changed. That is theatre at its best.”
