Anniversary events may be over, but the celebrating continues for the SLO Saturday Morning Farmers’ Market.

Sales on Aug. 31 were the highest in the market’s 35-year history. And the number of shoppers over the entire three-weekend anniversary celebration increased dramatically, according to Peter Jankay, market manager.

“Wow, there were a lot more people,” Jankay said. “Annual sales at this market have increased dramatically during the last seven years, and the celebration’s huge success indicates significant annual sales increases.”

The SLO Saturday Morning Farmers’ Market drew a huge crowd Aug. 31, with a special salute to farmers and shoppers from the market’s beginnings in the summer of 1978. That was the year then-Governor Jerry Brown signed the Direct Marketing Act establishing California Certified Farmers’ Markets.

The Saturday morning market was one of the first five farmers’ markets in the state of California.

The SLO Saturday markets take place 8-10:45 a.m. at the Cost Plus World Market and Embassy Suites parking lot.
