The San Luis Obispo County Community Foundation revealed its new name and logo today. Now called The Community Foundation San Luis Obispo County, the makeover marks the extraordinary success that has been achieved since 1998. This county-wide organization has distributed 3,879 grants totaling almost $22 million dollars in our county, and has built an endowment of $32 million to support the changing needs and interests of San Luis Obispo County residents in perpetuity.

“The subtle change of our name reflects how people already refer to us,” said Ann Robinson, president. “As the community’s foundation, we serve local needs and help people accomplish their philanthropic goals, both locally and beyond. Our research shows that people consider us the home of philanthropy in SLO County, and we want to help our residents with all of their charitable giving needs.”

The Community Foundation’s success is also in its services. For example, since the Real Estate Foundation of San Luis Obispo County was established as a supporting organization to The Community Foundation in 2009, some donors have discovered that REF can be a valuable tool in their philanthropy. Nonprofits can also use REF to manage the complexity of real estate gifts and then benefit from the proceeds. To date, REF has facilitated the sales of six properties resulting in over $1.3 million being given back to our community.

“The driving force behind The Community Foundation’s success is the dedicated individuals who believe in what we do,” said Barry VanderKelen, executive director. “We could not accomplish our work without our Board, staff, donors, allies in the community and those we serve. We are honored that people regard The Community Foundation as a trusted partner in philanthropy.”

More than 300 funds, scholarships and awards have been established through The Community Foundation. These funds include the widely recognized Women’s Legacy Fund, Growing Together Initiative, Paul Wolf Accessibility Advocacy Award, and Art Inspires! Fund.
