The 2nd Annual San Luis Obispo County Saving Strokes will take place on Thursday, June 6, 2013, at Laguna Lake Golf Course from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

SV2

Saving Strokes, a program of the American Heart/American Stroke Association, encourages stroke survivors to participate in stroke rehabilitation through golf. Stroke survivors are paired with golf professionals and physical therapists to work on strength, flexibility and technique. The event also gives stroke survivors and caregivers an opportunity to socialize with others who share similar interests and experiences. All levels of skill and mobility are invited to participate.

Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center first brought the event to San Luis Obispo last year. The event is free to stroke survivors and includes a heart healthy lunch. Registration is available by calling (800) 483-6387.

According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is one of the leading causes of death and serious, long-term disability in the United States. Stroke survivors often face difficulty with balance and coordination and in many cases, are left with the use of only one side of their body. A 1999 study from the University of Chicago showed that techniques important in golf, such as focus, dexterity and balance, can also help improve strength and flexibility for stroke survivors.

In 2011, Sierra Vista earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for certification as a Primary Stroke Center, making it the only primary stroke center between Santa Barbara and San Jose.
