Is it getting hot in here, or is it just me? Join the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden on Saturday, August 10 at 1 p.m. in the Oak Glen Pavilion as they welcome local meteorologist John Lindsey, ecologist Dr. Lou Pitelka, and astronomer Dr. Ray Weymann for a fascinating discussion on climate change and how it is affecting the local ecology.
Lindsey is very involved in San Luis Obispo County. In addition to his work as PG&E’s Diablo Canyon meteorologist, he produces and distributes daily local forecasts, which can be heard weekday mornings on KVEC 920 AM. He also writes the weekly column Weather Watch for The Tribune, which covers a wide range of weather-related topics including changing conditions along our coast.
Dr. Pitelka served for two years as a program director in Ecosystem Science at the National Science Foundation. He received a Ph.D. in Plant Ecology from Stanford University, and for more than two decades has been involved in planning, administering and conducting research on the effects of climate change and other elements of global change on natural ecosystems. As a contributor to the IPCC 2005 assessment of climate change, he is one of the many co-recipients of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.
Dr. Weymann is a retired astronomer with 40 years experience in teaching and research at major universities and observatories. His research interests have varied from the history of the early expanding universe to the atmospheres of stars, and combines calculations and observations with some of the world’s most powerful telescopes, including the Hubble Space Telescope. More recently his interests have turned to public education about science for adults and students, especially concerning climate science.
Presentation is $5 for members/$10 non-members and will be followed at 2 p.m. by a free docent-led tour of the Garden. For more information contact [email protected] or (805) 541-1400 x304. A $3 fee is charged for parking by San Luis Obispo County Parks in El Chorro Regional Park April through September on weekends and holidays.
