The San Luis Obispo Little Theatre has received a generous $5,000 grant to fund tuition scholarships for students participating in its Academy of Creative Theatre educational programs throughout the 2013-2014 Season. The grant was provided through Art Inspires!, a program of the San Luis Obispo County Community Foundation, funded by the Holser Educational Fund for the Performing Arts. An endowed fund, this grant making program supports performing arts education for young artists and audiences, contributing to the cultural development of the community. The grant will underwrite need-based tuition scholarships for students participating in the Little Theatre’s extensive education program which includes two summer camps, after-school theatre classes in the spring and fall, a spring break camp and two production classes which offer students the opportunity to participate in professionally-directed full length theatrical productions.

Since 1997, ACT has provided year-round theatrical training for youth ages 5-18 and has sought to fill the gap between what our local schools are able to offer our children, given their recent budget cutbacks, and what California State Educational Standards recommend that each child should have the opportunity to experience and to learn. ACT’s hands-on theatrical production classes, offered at the City Playhouse in San Luis Obispo, are open to students throughout the county.

“Participating in theatre encourages creativity and builds self-confidence” says ACT Coordinator Kerry DiMaggio. “ACT provides a creative, artistic, educational and FUN outlet for children who might not otherwise be engaged with their peers or other important adult role models. This generous grant from the Community Foundation will enable any child with a desire to participate in our programs the chance to do so, without regard to the tuition cost.”

The Academy of Creative Theatre is currently accepting registrations for two summer camps scheduled to take place in June and July. For more information, please visit slolittletheatre.org or contact Kerry DiMaggio, ACT coordinator, at (805) 781-3889, ext. 14 or email [email protected].
