The United Way of San Luis Obispo County Youth Board is currently accepting applications for the 2013-2014 year.

Youth Board members serve as a United Way Board of Directors and are given the opportunity to make a direct impact on their peers by addressing the needs of their community.

It is a unique volunteer experience that seeks to increase philanthropy and leadership in San Luis Obispo County youth, improve programs to better serve our community, and promote positive relationships between youth and adults. As part of their philanthropic work, the Youth Board will award three $1,000 grants to local youth-driven programs.

During the school year, members will learn about and discuss community needs, volunteer within SLO
County, and fundraise for their grant fund. They will hear from guest speakers who have knowledge of the community, providing an opportunity for students to meet diverse contributors in the county and to partner with them on projects such as campaigns and fundraising.

Members also network with other students from throughout SLO County, have the opportunity to hold
Executive Officer positions, learn fundraising, marketing and advocacy strategies, and understand how a Board of Directors functions.

All high school students from San Luis Obispo County are eligible to participate in the UWSLOC Youth
Board program, though the Youth Board has a capacity of 35 members and an application is required.
The application deadline has been extended to Friday, September 13. The Youth Board holds meetings on the third Tuesday evening of each month, from September until May, from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.
