San Luis Obispo Repertory Theatre is proud to announce its upcoming production of The Thanksgiving Play by renowned playwright Larissa Fasthorse. Set to hit the stage on May 3, 2024, this thought provoking comedy promises an engaging exploration of cultural appropriation, identity and the complexities of modern day Thanksgiving celebrations.
Directed by Rachel Tietz, the production features an incredible cast who will bring Fasthorse’s witty and insightful script to life. As the play unfolds, audiences will find themselves immersed in a hilarious yet poignant story that challenges conventional narratives surrounding Thanksgiving.
The Thanksgiving Play follows a group of well-intentioned but misguided theatre artists as they attempt to devise a culturally sensitive Thanksgiving play for a school presentation. Faced with their own biases and limited understanding of Indigenous culture, the characters navigate a series of comedic mishaps and unexpected revelations. Through Fasthorse’s sharp writing and nuanced characterizations, the play prompts audiences to reflect on the ways in which history, tradition and privilege intersect in contemporary society.
“We are thrilled to bring Larissa Fasthorse’s thought-provoking work to our stage,” said Kevin Harris, Managing Artistic Director of San Luis Obispo Repertory Theatre. “With its blend of humor and social commentary, The Thanksgiving Play offers a timely and compelling exploration of issues that resonate deeply with audiences today. We believe it will spark important conversations and encourage greater understanding and empathy.”
