The City of San Luis Obispo Public Works Department is seeking input from the community to help achieve the goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and severe injuries in San Luis Obispo.

Community members are invited to provide their input via the City’s Vision Zero online map survey by flagging locations where they have observed transportation safety or mobility concerns. This information, along with collision data, will help City staff develop the City’s first Vision Zero Action Plan.

Vision Zero is a global initiative to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries, while increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all. The core message of the Vision Zero initiative—adopted as policy by the City Council in 2016—is simple: one death on our streets is too many. The development of the Vision Zero Action Plan aims to identify priority actions and areas of focus to work towards the City’s goal of zero traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries by 2030. With the Vision Zero Action Plan, the City will be focusing on preventing the most severe types of traffic collisions within the City of San Luis Obispo.

Because some collisions go unreported to law enforcement and near-misses are often not recorded at all, some locations of concern may not be represented in the City’s collision data. The community’s input will be used in addition to collision data to address potential safety issues and help guide the development of the Vision Zero Action Plan.

Staff will take a data-driven approach to identify the types of street design features and user behaviors that are most likely to contribute to severe collisions in similar areas in the future. The plan will identify the most effective types of systematic engineering, enforcement, and education strategies to help the City focus future priorities and investments where they will provide the greatest benefit towards achieving the goal of eliminating traffic fatalities in San Luis Obispo. The Vision Zero Action Plan will be published for public review in spring of 2024.
