Santa Barbara public radio listeners, long served by San Luis Obispo-based KCBX, will soon have two additional public radio stations to choose from. With Pasadena-based NPR affiliate KPCC expanding its broadcast to include Santa Barbara and Santa Monica-based NPR affiliate KCRW poised to do the same in the coming weeks, Santa Barbara listeners will find themselves with four public radio station options. Santa Barbara has long been served by two NPR affiliate stations: KCBX, and California Lutheran University’s KCLU, putting newcomers KPCC and KCRW in the position of having to carve out an audience from an already saturated market. KPCC will continue to broadcast out of Pasadena, with no intent on producing content local to Santa Barbara, while KCRW reportedly brought on one news reporter to produce local content. San Luis Obispo’s KCBX showed signs of strength earlier this year, when they brought on their first news director, Randol White.
