The County of San Luis Obispo invites residents to attend a variety of public tours and activities in April to celebrate National County Government Month.

To showcase the County’s innovative programs and projects, this year’s activities include educational classes and guided tours at the County jail, public health lab, Lopez Lake, and various County fire stations. The tours will show how the County works to create a safe, healthy, livable and prosperous community. Registration is required to attend and will close 24 hours prior to each tour’s start time.

“This is an opportunity for the people we serve to see the positive ways their local government impacts the community,” said County Administrative Officer Dan Buckshi. “We are proud to serve the community and we welcome folks to come see what we do firsthand.”

National County Government Month, held each April, is an annual celebration of county government. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Brilliant Ideas at Work.” Featured events include public guided tours of some of the County’s innovative facilities, programs and projects, including the County Public Health Lab, which has new, state-of-the-art equipment capable of detecting and analyzing infectious diseases.

People are encouraged to register early, as space is limited for these tours and activities. Last year, the County offered four National County Government Month tours with limited capacity and all of them were full within days of opening registration. This year, the County is offering even more activities, but County officials say they expect this year’s capacity to fill up just as fast.

“People have praised our National County Government Month activities in the past, and we’re stepping it up this year to offer even more,” said County Communications Analyst Whitney Szentesi. “But the number of open slots fills up quickly, so it’s important to sign up early.”
