A new app created by a group of volunteers provides a one-stop source for important information, contacts and links to resources in SLO County.
The development of the app, which will be updated twice a year, originated with local resident Linda Rawlings. Rawlings is a retired marriage and family counselor and volunteer with 40 Prado Homeless Services Center. Conversations with Prado Day Center visitors made her aware that many had needs for children’s clothing, medical treatment, employment assistance and other support, and that while there are many community resources available, some of the people most in need were unaware of how to find them. The idea of creating a free phone app took hold.
Rawlings went to work, soliciting volunteer help from her friend and hospital emergency room nurse Laura Slaughter, which led to app designer/programmer Dharmesh Patel of onesiren.com, and a big assist from Bryn Smith of Community Action Partnership of SLO County (CAPSLO), a local nonprofit social services program provider.
The result is a one-stop shop for finding information to meet virtually any social service need, including housing, substance issues, legal help, transportation, mental health counseling, veterans services, help for the elderly and even animal services. The app provides information about the resources offered, gives links to providers and connects users with contact numbers, hours of operation and addresses for more than 60 local organizations. Information on free community events and volunteer opportunities are also included. There is also a referral to United Way 211 for further assistance.
To get the free app, search for “SLO Community Resources” in the app store on smartphones or tablets. Internet or cell service is required to install the app. Once installed, the app will work with or without internet or cell service.
The web version can be accessed at Friendsof40Prado.org.
