The Central Coast AquariumCentral Coast Aquarium 2013 350 presents a free to the public event that include s a SCUBA dive cleanup off the Harford Pier, a beach/estuary/trail cleanup and a festival featuring educational and wildlife organizations.

Last years event was a huge success. More than 300 participants cleaned 240 pounds of trash and 125 pounds of recyclables. Participants and visitors also enjoyed numerous exhibits and speakers, as part of our Earth Day Festival. A highlight from the DIVE cleanup was the discovery of a large red octopus that had made a home in the most unlikely of places, a discarded toilet, found below the Harford Pier.

This year’s event will be bigger and better than last years. Six wildlife and educational organizations attending and the organizers are hosting a large thank you barbecue that will be run by the San Luis Obispo Fire Department. In addition, there will be live music during lunch and fun activities for the kids throughout the day. All cleanup participants will also receive a complementary same-day aquarium admission.

As in past years, the CCA’s primary goal for this event is the cleanup of Avila Beach above and below the ocean’s surface, but they are also excited for the opportunity to promote the stewardship of our treasured coastal marine resources on this Earth Day weekend.
