The City has opened its annual Advisory Body recruitment cycle. Applications are being accepted for 33 voluntary positions on fourteen public advisory bodies that each serve an important role in advising CityCouncil and City staff on a variety of issues. Recruitment is open through January 15, 2023. Incumbents who are eligible for additional terms must apply and be interviewed by City Council. Re-appointment is not guaranteed.

Once volunteers are selected and approved by City Council, the term of service will begin April 1, 2023.  

The City’s advisory bodies are made up of community volunteers that advise staff and the City Council on matters that affect current public policy and issues that will impact the future of the San Luis Obispo community. Positions are available on the following advisory bodies:

  • Active Transportation Committee – Provides oversight and policy direction on matters related to bicycle and pedestrian transportation in San Luis Obispo and its relationship to bicycling and walking outside the city. There are currently two positions available, one with an incumbent eligible for reappointment, and one vacant position 
  • Architectural Review Commission – Reviews and approves plans for all structures and physical improvements, and for any relocation, addition, extension, or exterior change to existing buildings, structures, and physical improvements, as set forth in Section 2.48.050 of the San Luis Obispo Municipal Code. Approval by the ARC must be obtained before a building permit or other city permit may be issued authorizing construction, alteration, relocation, addition, or extension. There are currently two positions available with incumbents eligible for reappointment for both positions.
  • Construction Board of Appeals – Hears and decides appeals of orders, decisions, and determinations made by the building official relative to the applications and interpretations of various technical codes. There are currently two positions available. One position for a representative of the disabled community and one position currently with an incumbent eligible for reappointment.
  • Cultural Heritage Committee – Oversees a broad range of educational and technical assistance programs aimed at preserving historical and cultural resources. There are three positions available, all with incumbents eligible for reappointment.
  • Housing Authority Board – The Board is directly responsible for all operations of the Housing Authority, approves applications for federal and state housing programs, approves the authority’s annual operating budgets, and assists the City in addressing housing needs of low- and medium-income households. There are currently five openings, all with incumbents eligible for re-appointment. Two positions are for resident representatives.
  • Human Relations Commission – Advises and makes recommendations to the City Council which promote and advance inclusion, mutual understanding, respect, and equitable treatment to all members of the SLO City community. There are currently three positions open with incumbents eligible for re-appointment.
  • Mass Transportation Committee – Advises City staff and the City Council on all matters related to public transportation in San Luis Obispo. There are two positions currently open, one with an incumbent eligible for reappointment, and one for a representative of the disabled community.
  • Personnel Board – Hears employee appeals of disciplinary action, to review employee grievances, and to hear issues of Council censure. There is currently one position open with an incumbent eligible for reappointment.
  • Planning Commission – Assist in recommendations to the City Council for the City’s development as set forth in San Luis Obispo Municipal Code §2.12.040, including reviewing development projects, Cityspecific area plans, and the City’s capital improvement program. There are two positions available, one with an incumbent eligible for reappointment.
  • Promotional Coordinating Committee – Advises the Council in working to improve the quality of life for all City residents and our visitors. The Committee recommends projects to help promote the City as a regional trade, recreation, and tourist center, consistent with community goals. There are two positions currently open, both with incumbents eligible for reappointment.
  • Parks and Recreation Commission – Advises the City’s Parks & Recreation Department and the City Council on the development and operation of recreation programs and parks, and on the implementation of the Parks and Recreation Element of the City’s General Plan. There is currently one position open with the incumbent eligible for reappointment.
  • Tourism Business Improvement District Board – advises the Council on the administration and use of the TBID assessment funds and recommends projects to promote tourism to the City to directly benefit the City’s lodging industry. Members must be affiliated with the lodging industry within the City. There is currently one vacant position.
  • Tree Committee – advise City staff and the City Council on all matters related to trees in San Luis Obispo There is currently one vacant position.
