The Boys & Girls Clubs of South San Luis Obispo County announced the award of a $10,000 grant from The Women’s Legacy Fund of San Luis Obispo County. Funding will support the organization’s “SMART” Girls program. SMART Girls – “Skills, Mastery and Resistance Training” – is a small-group health and fitness education and self-esteem enhancement program to meet the developmental needs of girls ages 8 to 12.
The goal of the SMART Girls is to help girls develop healthy attitudes and lifestyles. Participants interact with mentors in group sessions and learn how to make positive, productive decisions at this critical stage in their lives. SMART Girls takes the skill, mastery and resistance training concept even further by providing gender- and age-specific information pertaining to understanding and appreciating the physical, emotional and social changes their bodies are experiencing, developing positive lifelong nutritional habits, and adopting healthy exercise routines. Perhaps most importantly, SMART girls learn to create important female relationships through the involvement of adult female role models/mentors and via communication skills for building cooperative relationships by recognizing and avoiding abusive behavior.
“With funding from the Women’s Legacy Fund, our SMART Girls program will create opportunities for our younger female members,” stated Jennifer Flachman, Boys & Girls Clubs Executive Director. “We believe it is important for a young woman to establish positive relationships with adult females. Relationships that foster self-esteem create a lasting, productive impact on the young women we support. We have confidence in the effectiveness of SMART Girls because it is based upon our SMART Moves program we’ve had in place for several years. We are fortunate to provide a program that improves relationships between young women and the older, significant females in their lives.”
