Cal Poly 300At the end of this month, March 24-28, the Center for Sustainability at Cal Poly State University in San Luis Obispo will be hosting a week-long Compost Training, culminating in a one-day Compost Symposium on Friday, March 28.

The week training will provide professional development on the practice of large-scale composting in conjunction with the Cal Poly Compost Unit, one of the nation’s largest university composting operations. Details can be found on the Center’s website: http://cfs.calpoly.edu/compost_training.html.

The Friday symposium is open to the general public and will host leading speakers on soil health, the soil foodweb (microbial ecology), vermicomposting (with worms) and the benefits and uses of compost in general. It will be of interest to a wide audience interested in those and related topics. Symposium keynote speaker, Dr. Deborah Neher of the University of Vermont and founder of the Soil Ecology & Biological Indicators Laboratory (SEBIL), will present on “Understanding Soil Ecology & Its Role In Compost and Composting Methods.” Details on the symposium can be found at: http://cfs.calpoly.edu/compost_symposium.html.

Cost for the week-long training is $450 before 3/15, $500 thereafter. Cost for the one-day symposium is $50 before 3/22, $75 thereafter.
