The SLO County Air Pollution Control District is issuing this press release to provide the public with information in preparation for a prescribed burn window at Camp Roberts. The burn window for this Camp Roberts Impact Range Fire Hazard Training Burn will be between May 21 and June 8, 2019, with the preferred date range between May 29 and 31, weather permitting.

This fire hazard training burn will represent the largest participation of outside fire agencies in a wildland fire training scenario. Fire jurisdictions from San Diego to Monterey will be present for the training and will be practicing wildland firefighting techniques to further their understanding and abilities in the case of real wildland fire scenarios.

Smoke may be present on the day of the training, and the SLO County Air Pollution Control District and Monterey Bay Air Resources District will be working collaboratively with all involved agencies to ensure up to date air quality information is provided to the public.

Children, the elderly, and those that already have a respiratory condition are the most susceptible to the health impacts of wood smoke and should use caution if they smell smoke.

Additional information will be provided as the burn window gets closer. The burn is dependent on weather and air quality conditions that are favorable for smoke dispersal.  If the conditions are not as desired, the burn will be rescheduled.
