Up to 500 community members can receive a $20 gift card as a reward for pledging to support local businesses in the city of San Luis Obispo, starting Tuesday, June 15.

Following the success of the Buy Local Bonus program, the City designed this new incentive program to keep dollars local through the summer and continue helping San Luis Obispo recover from the economic hardship of the COVID-19 pandemic.

To receive a complimentary gift card to a San Luis Obispo business, community members can take an in-person Support Local Pledge at the SLO Chamber Visitor Center, promising to spend their dollars locally. Anyone who takes the pledge will sign a floral-shaped pledge card, which will be displayed in the Visitor Center windows on Monterey Street. There are 500 gift cards available and each person can take the pledge once.

“The community support we have seen these past months has been awe inspiring and we are thrilled to launch our new Support Local Pledge to continue to help local businesses, entrepreneurs and visionaries,” said Molly Cano, SLO City Tourism Manager. “Keeping dollars local reaches further than just supporting one business — rather, it supports the economy, creates more jobs and reduces environmental impact.”

The Support Local Pledge comes off the heels of the success of the Buy Local Bonus program that resulted in more than $720,000 of direct local spending within five months. 146 businesses participated in the program, and at program end there were 4,474 qualified entries with an average receipt total of $172 — well above the $100 minimum.

“Time and time again our community has stepped up to support our businesses through this unprecedented crisis,” said Jim Dantona, President/CEO of the SLO Chamber. “We are proud to once again partner with the City of SLO to encourage local spending so we can recover from this pandemic and get back to business as usual.”

The Visitor Center is located at 895 Monterey Street and is open Sunday through Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. For any questions about the program, please email supportslo@slocity.org
