Little Brother Community Foundation’s Grants Manager, Len Smolburd presents a check to Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Luis Obispo County’s CEO, Jenny Luciano
The Community Foundation San Luis Obispo County awarded a grant of $4,350 from their Community Needs grant program to Big Brothers Big Sisters in support of nutrition for the agency’s school based youth mentoring programs. With this $4,350 gift, their total contributions in support of the agency’s school based mentoring programs amount to $98,600 since 2006.
The School Based program pairs high school and college students with elementary students for weekly supervised group and individual activities taking place at elementary school sites. The program creates an exceptional bond between at-risk children and older students who have volunteered to support them. A group of carefully selected high school and college student mentors travel to their partner elementary school once each week for the entire school year.
“The Community Foundation is pleased to support Big Brothers Big Sisters’ after-school mentorship program in elementary schools throughout the county. Big Brothers Big Sisters’ programs focus on the wellness of the whole child; we are proud to work with organizations that enhance the quality of life in our community,” says Community Foundation CEO Heidi McPherson.
“Hungry children cannot learn and focus to their full potential, which is why the funds from the Community Foundation’s Community Needs Grant Program will provide nutritious after-school snacks and nutrition education for over 200 participant in our school based programs. The funding will go a long way toward helping at-risk elementary school Littles in Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo, reach their full potential,” says Big Brothers Big Sisters CEO, Jenny Luciano. “We are grateful for the Community Foundation’s support of positive outcomes for local children.”
The partnership between The Community Foundation San Luis Obispo County provides support of direct nutrition expenses at three school sites for our School Based Program for one year; Pacheco Elementary, in San Luis Obispo, and Del Mar Elementary in Morro Bay, and Nipomo Elementary in Nipomo.
