e-InsiderFollowing months of construction, seismic retrofitting and redesign, the Johnson building on the corner of Higuera and Chorro streets is preparing for new tenants by the first of March. The former SLO Chamber home for 42 years has been gutted and reconfigured into five individual suites, with a larger storefront at 1039 Chorro St., previously the Visitor Center. Pierre Rademaker Design is set to move into the two of the upstairs offices on the Higuera Street side of the building and insiders report that the owners of Avanti as well as Ali Vahdani – a structural engineer instrumental in many of the downtown retrofit projects and the owner of Eatz – will occupy the other upstairs offices. Work on the two Chorro Street storefronts, including restoration of the crown and new brickwork, is underway as Haven Properties is plannng to turn the 1039 Chorro St. spot into a second location to showcase local real estate. The 1035 Chorro St. location – the former location for Bliss Café – is scheduled to be a Which Wich Superior Sandwiches shop, a national chain with over 250 locations that bills itself as featuring customizable sandwiches in “an edgy, magnetic environment.”
