The French Hospital Medical Center Volunteer Guild recently awarded seven nursing scholarships, totaling $5,250 to seven promising local students who are seeking careers in the medical professional. The scholarship money, to be used for books and supplies, was funded by the Beth Peterson Memorial Scholarship program.
Many of the scholarship recipients either were, or currently are volunteers at FHMC. Each of the students received $750. The seven recipients are: Alison Scott, Haley Hudson, Casey Lary, Elissa Parrish, Adrielle Van Amsterdam, Maureen Bonin, and Colleen McCann.
The FHMC Volunteer Guild is made up of more than 120 volunteers. They operate the French Hospital gift shop and raise money for the scholarships through bake, book, and jewelry sales. Recognizing worthy students and furthering their careers in the medical field are one of the highlights of their outreach.
In order to qualify for the scholarships, selected nursing student scholars must be second semester, first year nursing students at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo. A noteworthy academic standing and an essay detailing how the scholarship will help the students achieve their educational and nursing goals are considered by the Volunteer Guild when selecting recipients.
