Hospice of San Luis Obispo County (Hospice SLO County) is offering a Young Adult Grief Group beginning on Wednesday, February 6, 2019. This support group is for young adults (ages approximately 18-26) who have experienced the death of a loved one. This new support group will meet on Wednesdays from 3 – 4 p.m. at Hospice SLO County, 1304 Pacific Street, San Luis Obispo.
For many young adults, losing a loved one is an isolating experience. It can be difficult for young people to meet others in their age group who have experienced a death in their lives. This support group provide a space for young adults to talk about grief.
“It can be challenging to find peer support when you’re young,” said Emily Erskin, one of the facilitators for the support group. “We’ve heard from young people who say they feel out of place when they attend support groups because the majority of participants are older than them. It’s hard to be the youngest person in the room.”
“So many young adults are looking for a space to connect with their peers,” said co-facilitator, Jennifer Reimer. “It’s important for young people to know that they are not alone and that there are others who have experienced loss at their age. The group will focus on grief reactions, healthy coping skills and sharing loss experiences.”
All of Hospice SLO County’s support groups are offered free of charge. Groups are led by volunteers trained in facilitation and grief counseling. The offering of groups changes to match current community needs, but currently offered drop-in groups are:
- Child Loss Support Group
- Caregiver Support Group
- General Grief Support Group
